The 麻豆村鈥檚 GeoTEd-UAS program teamed up with the Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC [formerly Thomas Nelson CC]) in partnership with Virginia鈥檚 Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) to conduct two drone camps focused on special needs students from area high schools in Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg/James City County. The camps explored career preparation and applications in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS [aka drones]). Students were taught important safety and regulatory practices for drone operators, as well as the basics of flying drones. Students even earned their FAA TRUST certificates for recreational flyers and received their own drone. During each camp, students flew small drones inside through an obstacle course, and larger drones outside on VPCC鈥檚 campus, and during a trip to Anderson Park in Newport News arranged by John Lesko (GIS/UAS Specialist, Newport News, VA). On the last day of each camp, students took a field trip to Nauticus (Norfolk, VA) to see the museum鈥檚 current drone exhibit, fly drones in their 鈥楧rone Zone,鈥 and crawl over the decks of the USS Wisconsin.

鈥淭his was a great experience for our students,鈥 said Sherry Hildebrandt, HCS transition specialist. 鈥淏oth camps helped students gain self-confidence while learning additional life and vocational skills.鈥 VPCC Professor Julie Young said, 鈥淥ne of the students said 鈥榠t was the best week of his life,鈥 and that was priceless!鈥

VSGC supports a number of Innovative Projects every year. These projects cover many disciplines and target both K-12 and Higher Education projects. This year, twelve awards were made totaling over $80,000. Areas of interest included programs that supported the Apollo 50th anniversary, summer research experiences for undergraduate students and teacher professional development programs. The winners are listed below:

professor Randy Chambers was awarded funds for two undergraduates to research greenhouse gas flux from stormwater retention ponds in order to identify ways to decrease global warming caused by methane emissions.

Gon Namkoong will use funds for a research project titled 鈥淭hermal stability of perovskite solar cells using nanoparticles/polymer composites.鈥

Also at Old Dominion University, Joanna Garner鈥檚 project 鈥淰oyages and Discoveries: Cross-Generational Reflections on the Significance of Space Exploration鈥 will bridge the divide between the Apollo and digital generations with a regional competition. Winning entries will be shown at in Norfolk.

At , Bevlee Watford and Kim Lester proposed another summer of sessions for rising seventh and eighth graders.

Virginia Tech will also hold a professional development workshop for high school biology, chemistry, earth science and physics teachers. James Heflin proposed this workshop, which will focus on nanoscience and nanotechnology.

At the , Gaurev Giri proposed a summer Research Experience for undergraduate students to study 鈥淢etal Organic Framework Thin Film for Electronic and Sensing Applications.鈥

Also at the University of Virginia, Max C.N. Castorani and Scott C. Doney proposed a Research Experience for one undergraduate to study 鈥淯nderstanding the patterns and drivers of water quality in coastal Virginia using Landsat.鈥

At the University of Virginia, Jonathan Tan will offer an undergraduate research position for the (VICO).

At , Brent Richey will hold a camp titled 鈥淭his IS Rocket Science: Remembering and Modeling Mankind鈥檚 Giant Leap.鈥 Fifteen students will construct a rocket and launch it on July 20.

This summer, will hold a week-long advanced robotics camp for rising third through eighth graders. Patrick Tompkins and Terry Wagner proposed this camp for area students.

On March 11-13, 2019, 麻豆村 (VSGC), in conjunction with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center鈥檚 Wallops Flight Facility, completed the 麻豆村 Takes Flight Professional Development workshop for 19 麻豆村 faculty from community colleges around Virginia.

This three-day, residential workshop focused on the integration of 麻豆村 in the NASA workplace with the purpose of assisting faculty in educating students on the importance of teamwork, technical skills and problem solving.

Briefings and tours highlighted the suborbital and orbital missions and launches conducted at NASA Wallops and managed by NASA Wallops for mission locations around the world. The importance of the collaborative work of engineers, scientists, technicians, safety and range control personnel was demonstrated all around the facility.

The participants also analyzed a hands-on, real-life case study necessitating team work, trouble shooting, and real-time decision making.

The workshop took place at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility where participants were provided lodging, meals, and workshop materials. Upon development of a lesson plan based on knowledge or processes learned at the workshop, participants will receive an $800 stipend.
