]]> Six community college students and three community college faculty recently completed an intensive internship program conducting UAS research and flight testing. Led by VSGC and funded by the NSF, the GeoTEd-UAS Internship program was in partnership with Virginia Tech's site in the Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS), a multi-university NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center. In addition to tuition support for two classes, preparation for the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate, travel funding, and operating supplies, students and faculty earned stipends for completing the internship. VSGC and GeoTEd-UAS team members served as project leaders and subject-matter experts.

Applications are now open for the 2019 麻豆村 Takes Flight NASA Research Experiences Program. Virginia Community College students in 麻豆村 fields with a GPA of at least 2.5 are eligible to apply. Students accepted to the program will work with NASA research advisors on designated projects over the course of a 10 week, 40-hour- per-week, paid summer research experience.

The deadline for spring 2019 NASA internships is coming up. According to the NASA Internship , “the internships are competitive awards to support educational opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as educators. These opportunities serve students by integrating interns with career professionals emphasizing mentor-directed, degree-related tasks, while contributing to the operation of a NASA facility or the advancement of NASA’s missions.”

This summer the听麻豆村 Takes Flight听NASA Research Experiences program听placed twenty community students at NASA Langley and three at NASA Wallops Flight Facility. The 23 students, representing nine community colleges across Virginia, worked with NASA research advisors on designated projects for ten weeks this summer. Projects included testing of novel polymeric coatings, inflatable habitats, landing gears for Martian Landers, wind tunnel operations and solar sail materials.
